How to get started

Canada Gives recommends that a foundation account be established with a minimum of $100,000. Many of our clients grow their endowment to significant levels of $1 million or more working with the tax and financial planning assistance of their trusted advisors.

Here’s How it Works

Determine how much you want to give annually and over what period of time
If you assume a 5 per cent investment return on average each year from your endowment gift, you can identify the size of the endowment required
Determine how much of every donation should be allocated to today’s needs while you build your endowment

Building your foundation

If you want to give away $25,000 every year, you would need to endow approximately $500,000 into your Canada Gives Foundation account.

You can make one significant donation if your personal financial circumstances permit, or build it over time with a number of donations. Each donation will receive a tax receipt for the full amount of the gift.

By allocating your donations between immediate and long-term funding, you can ensure that the charities you wish to support receive $25,000 from the ‘today’ portion of your gift, and direct the balance as an endowment gift.

Once the endowment is invested, it will generate annual grants to contribute towards the $25,000 goal. Every time you make a new gift, the allocation can change until you reach your $500,000 objective.
