By establishing Canada Gives as the beneficiary of your testamentary charitable gifts, you can leave bequests to your heirs/children while continuing to ensure your philanthropic endeavours create a lasting legacy.

How it works

By making Canada Gives the beneﬁciary of the gift in a will or insurance policy, all of the charitable funds will be directed to a speciﬁc Foundation account where the donor or their executor will have established a list of their chosen charities. The total bequest or insurance gift will be tax receipted to the estate by Canada Gives.

Canada Gives will ensure that these estate gifts are directed to the organizations the donor wished to support, and in the amount they requested each year.

Why using a Canada Gives Foundation is better than gifting directly to a charity

A Canada Gives donor advised fund provides significant benefits for donors interested in making charitable bequests from their estate:

Flexibility: A donor who uses a Canada Gives Foundation account can change his/her list of charities anytime during their lifetime, without any need to make changes to the will or insurance policy.

Safekeeping: Over time, charities may change their mandate or experience problems. In those circumstances, Canada Gives could send the annual gifts from your Foundation account to another organization with a similar charitable purpose

Reduced Risk to Your Estate: Unfortunately, estate gifts may be subject to litigation by the recipient charities you list in a will. By making the bequest to Canada Gives, who then disburses the individual gifts to each charity, there is no obligation to disclose the details to individual organizations, so the opportunity for any legal challenge is greatly reduced or eliminated
